A Foggy Day in Grand Marais

It was a foggy day in May when my brother and I visited the Grand Sable Dunes in May 2001. The Grand Sable Dunes are at the eastern end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, just outside the village of Grand Marais. They are the highest sand dunes on this section of Lake Superior.

On the Beach

Most of the beach at Grand Marais is sandy, but there is a large section of pebbles and rocks which are washed down from the Grand Sable River. This is a good place to search for odd-shaped and colored stones, as well as occasional pieces of driftwood that are washed up onshore.

Nature in Balance

The dunes are constantly shifting, eroding, sinking in one place, rising in another. There are several places of unique habitat for unusual plant and animal species, so visitors to the Dunes are requested to keep their impact as minimal as possible.

I was in the U.P. about 23 years ago. I guess it's about time to go back and experience more of the north woods.

Fog and dunes work well together, as I have notice many times at my little corner of Lake Michigan. Looks like a stunning place this.
