Navy Pier: Navy Pier - A lost opportunity?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Too many fudge shops. Navy Pier has a remarkable location overlooking one of the most dramatic skylines in the world. It's disappointing that the city of Chicago and the developers weren't able to make better use of the Navy Pier space once it became open for redevelopment. Basically, this is the same "Festive Waterfront Reused Old Buildings Tourist Tat" that has become an urban cliche very quickly in the last 20 years.

Alternative: Go to one of Chicago's many authentic ethnic neighborhoods and have an inexpensive dinner in a 1950s-era restaurant with surly waitresses and home-made pies in the display case out front.

  • Poor horsies. They've got to be frightened by all the car traffic. I've read somewhere that there is a city agency that works to make sure that they are fairly treated, but I've never heard anything from the horses' point of view.

    Alternative: Why not just walk?

Or take a taxi up and down Lake Shore Boulevard to the Lakeview neighborhood and back. That way you can really see Chicago's magnificent skyline.

I wish I could get up my nerve to try Priceline. You paid less to sleep than I paid to park! Well, almost anyway. I just can't make the leap to not know exactly what hotel they will give me.
