"Scenic and Historic River Town" Alton by yooperprof

Life on the Mississippi

Alton is a city of about 30,000 people just to the north of St. Louis. Although once an industrial and transportation center, the town seems to be trying to re-invent itself as a travel and tourism destitation. Riverboat gambling and antique stores now help to define Alton. Since it isn't on an interstate highway, much of the modern world seems to have bypassed this place. Perhaps some people would call it "nasty," but others (including yooperprof) think of it as charming.

In the background of the photo is the new US 67 bridge over the Mississippi.

Thanks for this page. Well over a dozen branches of my family resided in Alton from 1870 to 1950 and many worked at the Illinois Glass Company here.

Isn't a life sized statue of the world's tallest man located in Alton?

Bravo! Great stuff, Chet...architecture, museums, cemeteries, desserts...you know what's important. Had I been with you at the Just Desserts, since I love olives, I would have eaten your sandwich & you could have ordered something else.

Alton is really close to Elsah where I studied. And I have stranded in Springfield and other small places in the middle of nowhere in Illinois for some historic preservation research.
