"Artsy Village in the Hills above Kailua Kona" Holualoa by yooperprof

My bet is that you'll never find a urinal with a better view than the remarkable elevated bathrooms at the Kona Hotel in Holualoa. You reach it via an elevated walkway that juts out the back of the Inn. There are amazing views of the coastline far below. A true "must see"!

Holualoa is an arty community 1400 feet above Kailua-Kona. It's on SR 180, and there are also decent roads that link it directly with the larger town below. Holualoa is somewhat "off the beaten track," and all the more special for that. There are a few interesting shops and galleries here, but what's most special about the place is the sense of a "real Hawaiian" past here that's been lost in the more glamorous resort communities of the coast. That "real Hawaiian" past is epitomized by the small scale and humble Kona Hotel, a functioning B & B that stands out along the side of the road in Holualoa.
