when I was neither yooper nor a prof - Munich

April 1985. I was 22, and went to Munich with my dear mother. So much to see and do in the capital of Bavaria! A few weeks ago I was downstairs in my basement looking for some long underwear when I came across the box which contained my 1980s photo albums. Oh my. . . I didn't get back to Germany until November 2004. Nineteen years is too long between visits!

I was so young then, so young. . . It can be profoundly strange to meet yourself in photos and memories across the years. But even then travel was an important part of my life, and I think it's possible to see in my open face and my genuinely naive smiles the same enthusiastic tourist that I am today.

I took lots of head shots back then

I liked travelling with my mother. We were good companions. For one thing, she was a good audience for me. Even then, I liked to give small historical lectures about the places I visited. My Dad worked for TWA, and since I was still in school, I was still classified as a dependent and so both of us were able to fly to Germany on passes. That was a great perk to grow up with!

Pros and Cons

Pros:Munich is a wonderful city, especially if you haven't travelled a lot in Europe
In a nutshell:I'd like to go back there - and elsewhere in Germany

Did you take notes from your old trips? Nice set of pages, a lot of credit to the Germans who have put so much effort to put things back together after the devastation of WWII
