A Mighty Fortress is My God - and This Monastery!

Wow. Certainly this is a place that shouts out the power and the glory of the Church - and of the Benedictene Order of Monks. An emblem of the Baroque, the current Melk Stift, or Abbey, dates from the early 18th century when an energetic Abbot, Berthold Dietmayr began the systematic reconstruction of the entire hilltop monastery complex. Thank you, Brother Berthold!

A view of the monastery from the river-side road: on sunny days it glistens like an apparition, which I'm sure was the original intention.

Brings back memories of a canoe trip down the Danube in the fall of 1962. We stopped here, and I was suitably impressed despite having a huge case of the runs. (As long as you spend your money they don't mind if it comes from rural Michigan or wherever.)

Chet, it's a pleasure to read your pages. There's always a touch of humor, lots of helpful information, beautiful photography, and architectual commentary. Thanks.

Almost better than the exterior is the Trump-like private chapel to one side of the main sanctuary; attended a private mass there 2 years ago; could not stop crying, it was so beautiful.
