Wow. Certainly this is a place that shouts out the power and the glory of the Church - and of the Benedictene Order of Monks. An emblem of the Baroque, the current Melk Stift, or Abbey, dates from the early 18th century when an energetic Abbot, Berthold Dietmayr began the systematic reconstruction of the entire hilltop monastery complex. Thank you, Brother Berthold! |

Brings back memories of a canoe trip down the Danube in the fall of 1962. We stopped here, and I was suitably impressed despite having a huge case of the runs. (As long as you spend your money they don't mind if it comes from rural Michigan or wherever.) | Jerelis Tue Mar 27, 2007 16:12 UTC
