  • Outdoor Movie Festivals! The Viennese love 'em. In the summer there are several outdoor film venues scattered all over the city and its suburbs. The most famous is the prestigious musical film series at the Rathaus in the Ringstrasse, but there are others that are certainly worth a view. An excellent series is put on at the Augarten - Kino Unter Sternen. Much to my regret, I only made it there once - but if and when I return to Vienna in summertime I'll be back. The films are generally shown in their original language, with German subtitles - which meant that I got to see the brilliantly catty 1939 comedy "The Women" (Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, and Norma Shearer battling over a man) in English. The film festivals give the Viennese an opportunity to gather in public with friends, which seems to be something that they genuinely love to do. At the Augarten, there was a festive atmosphere as at a beer garden, with inexpensive brew and excellent food available for dining al fresco.

My daughter just wrote a paper on architectural modernism, and Loos's "Ornament is Crime" struck me as fascist, so I'm relieved, I guess, to see flower boxes. Still, knowing what the 20th century was to bring, his fanaticism is chilling.

Interesting and enthusiastic tips here! I can well understand why you loved Vienna. Weird that Freud and Herzl never met even though they lived in the same street. Maybe Freud was just too shy to introduce himself? (Nowadays they could have met online.)
