Pallas Athena stands guard over the Parlament building, spear in one hand, orb in the other - strength and wisdom balanced by the Divine. If only it were true! |
| | Bier von fass Ein bier bitte! Yes, the vineyards of Grinzing are visible from much of the city, and the famous wine taverns - or "heuriger" - are justifiably famous. But there is plenty of beer to be drunk in Vienna, and good beer at that. If you just ask for "ein bier," most likely you will be served a pilsner, perhaps not as fine as a Czech Budvar, but certainly serviceable! Be sure to ask for "ein Kr?gerl" - the full half liter. It's much better value than the smaller glass, the "Seidl," which is about a third of a liter. |
Modern Vienna - the Millenium Center It's not all beer gardens, men in lederhosen, and opera. Vienna is also one of the capitals of New Europe - and a crucial bridge between north and south, east and west. It's a vibrant international city with a cosmopolitan population. Vienna is more than one big open air museum: it's a place where the future is being shaped. | | | A City of the New Millenium |

Yankee_inCA Mon May 5, 2008 04:29 UTC My daughter just wrote a paper on architectural modernism, and Loos's "Ornament is Crime" struck me as fascist, so I'm relieved, I guess, to see flower boxes. Still, knowing what the 20th century was to bring, his fanaticism is chilling. | Nemorino Fri Jan 5, 2007 11:34 UTC Interesting and enthusiastic tips here! I can well understand why you loved Vienna. Weird that Freud and Herzl never met even though they lived in the same street. Maybe Freud was just too shy to introduce himself? (Nowadays they could have met online.) | xantylaol Sat Oct 14, 2006 18:39 UTC Didn't you have the famous Sacher Torte? | chiara76 Thu Jan 5, 2006 17:16 UTC Wonderful page about my favourite European city! I like your photos and great information. Very good page, really! Greetings from Poland. |
