Although Bath has ancient and medieval roots, it only became a major regional center in the 18th century when it was a fashionable spa town.
Jane Austen's England. Somehow I think it would be more fitting if automobiles were prohibited from driving around Bath's Crescents, and only fine horse-drawn carriages were allowed to approach these magnificent townhomes.
Bath Spa - the Romans developed the original bathing complex here in the 2nd century C.E. Fine archeological excavations in the 18th century provide the basis for the modern reconstruction of the ancient spa. It's one of the most interesting historic sites in all of England, well worth a full day on even the most hectic of tourist itineraries.

Charming city! Have twice missed the Jane Austen Centre. Would like to explore the city further.
Thanks for the interesting virtual tour! Bath seems like a very charming city -- and I have an affinity for places containing natural thermal springs.
Would like to see Bath, mimes and all. Thanks for your tips!
Trying to mime a comment of appreciation - but I have found you can't on VT. (Or at least if you do - nobody notices.)
Marcel Marceau is turning over (silently) in his grave. Or he would be, if he were dead.
