"A Town in a University" Cambridge by yooperprof

Someone once said that while Oxford was a notable example of a medieval University in the middle of a modern town, Cambridge offers an example of a "somewhat" modern town in the middle of a medieval University. I think that's a valid distinction between the two.

I've been in Cambridge on several different occasions since my first visit in 1982, when I was living in nearby Norwich. Cambridge is approached over the flatlands of Fen Country, and it remains a place very much influenced by its environment. In wintertime (and much of spring!) there's a peculiarly English damp cold here. You can see something of that chill even in this picture of a sunny day in April.

The photos on this page were taken in 1983, when my I visited Cambridge with my brother Rob. Cambridge can be appreciated by anyone, but it's especially great to be young there.
