The Royal Pump Room and Baths Strictly speaking, Regency England consists of the decade 1810-1820, during which George, Prince of Wales, assumed the prerogitives and honors of monarchy while his unbalanced and raving father King George III lived out his last sad years. The Royal Pump Room dates from 1813, and is reminiscent of much of the early 19th century architecture found in London. It enjoyed its greatest popularity between 1820 and 1840, when Dr. Jephson was chief physician. Jephson is commemorated in the nearby gardens which bear his name. |

| | Swan and Cygnets My friend Thomas and his family live in nearby Warwick, and I try to visit them whenever I'm in England. I met Thomas back in 1982, when I was on a year-abroad program at the University of East Anglia. He's been both an inspiration and an influence ever since. Many of my ideas regarding beer, architecture, and literature have been shaped during our long walks and pub-crawls. |
