Getting TO/AROUND: Finally, the River Thames is getting the attention it deserves. New pedestrial bridges across the river, the Eye of London, the Globe, the Tate Modern. . . and views of the rest of the city that are possible only from the riverbank.

    Transportation: The Millenium Bridge

Getting TO/AROUND: A good place for a pedestrial to cross the Thames is the Millenium Bridge, which provides a handy link between the Tate Modern and the neighborhood of St. Paul's Cathedral. The Bridge is a sleek and elegant new structure, and apparently, it's now safe even on windy days!

    Transportation: The Eye of London
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND

Getting TO/AROUND: I think that "Eye of London" belongs in the Transportation section! It takes you on a trip that you will long remember, even if it is (by definition) a round trip that deposits you in the same place where you started. The Eye of London is the majestic "Ferris Wheel" directly opposite from the Charing Cross Rail Station, and on a clear (or clear-ish) day you can see the a wide sweep of the Thames Valley, from Greenwich in the east to Windsor in the west.

    Transportation: Those Three-wheeled cars
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: You don't see too many of these any more, but there are still a few about. It's like a tricycle powered by a lawnmower engine, but you can pretty well park anywhere you please if you have one of these.

Getting TO/AROUND: There's a new high-speed rail link between Heathrow and Paddington Station. If you are staying somewhere in the Bayswater/Kensington/Notting Hill area this is the best option for getting into London. Of course, if you are heading out of London to the West Country, you'll travel through Paddington as well.

    Buses: Double Decker Buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: I have to admit that sometime I get a little bit queasy when I ride on the top of a double-decker. This is particularly true for some of the older models whose suspensions are pretty bouncy. The way that they whip around corners and traffic "circuses" has to be experienced to be believed! And under no circunstances can I read when I'm on the top deck - it makes me nauseous.

Walking in London: A good landmark for London walks
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: It's easy to get misplaced when you are strolling through London. It's useful to have a structure that you can use as a point of orientation when you might otherwise be lost. For a number of years I've used Centre Point Tower to help me orient myself on my London walks. It's the tallest structure in central London, visible from many places, and located at the important crossing where Oxford Street runs into Charing X Road. It's no one's favorite building in London - in fact many people hate it with a passion. But it does make for a helpful landmark.
