Getting TO/AROUND: Newcastle is a great city to walk. The river and its bridges make for many interesting vistas and vantagepoints. I've read that there are now many interesting things going on in Jarrow, south of the Tyne. The Baltic, a contemporary arts museum which uses a renovated grain warehouse, sounds especially worthwhile. To get across the river, I liked strolling across Robert Stephenson's great "High Level Bridge". This 1849 bridge was constructed with the levels, the upper level for the railway, the lower level for regular street traffic. The pedestrial sidewalk looks like a long corridor in some futuristic space station!

Getting TO/AROUND: It's somewhat surprising that a city of the moderate size of Newcastle should have an efficient and well-run subway system. It's inexpensive and easy to navigate.

Getting TO/AROUND: Rather beautiful iron frame shed in a tradition 19th century rail station.

Hi Chet, I enjoyed reading these tips, and I like your emphasis on the substantial Victorian architecture and its "Noble Aspirations". -- Are you planning any more trips to this part of the world?

Nice page on Newcastle, I'm looking forward to trying Newcastle Brown in its home town this weekend.

I found your travelogue on D-Day Parade wonderful & somewhat touching. I like your emphasis on architecture, Theatre Royal & the bridges, especially High Level Bridge. History of Charles, Earl Grey, fascinating. Local loyalty & pride, interesting, too.

Geordieland why aye man. Nice pics of castles! I think the Geordie accent is harder to understand than Manc personally.
