A Picturesque Cathedral City

Historic Winchester
Winchester makes an easy day-trip out of London, and is well worth a visit for its Cathedral and famous School. Winchester was the center of government in Anglo-Saxon England, all the way until the Norman Conquest, when William shifted the seat of his power to London some 65 miles away. Winchester remains one of the most "privileged" of English cities, its episcopacy ranking behind only Canterbury, York and Durham in precedence. Many of the Saxon Kings and Queens are buried in the Cathedral, along with such worthies as Izaak Walton, Jane Austen, and Samuel Wilberforce.
Plague Marker
This Monument is Erected by the Society of Natives on the Spot of Ground To which the Markets were removed and whose Basis is the very Stone on which Exchanges were made While the City lay under the Scourge of the DESTROYING PESTILENCE in the Year Sixteen Hundred Sixty-Six.
