Stonehenge gets all the attention, but in nearby Avebury, the stone circles are superior. They're more complete, and you can walk amongst them.
It isn't known for sure why these stone circles were built. Although, it seems kind of obvious to me that the circles were used for religious purposes, as calendars, as star and seasonal charts...and maybe as meeting places for the people in these ancient cultures. At the hostel, I remember one guy explaining how the stone circles were made by and for aliens as landing strips and so on...he's probably seen one too many Steven Speilberg movies.

Thanks for visiting my Alsace pages. Your Avebury tips are well thought out and on the money. I loved Avebury and Old Sarum (there is a hist. novel entitled 'Sarum' that you might enjoy. I think parts of it go back about 6000 years.
Thank you for sharing your pictures of Avebury. A couple of times I was near it but didn't know enough about it to go there, and I was to go there with a friend but that didn't work out. Silbury Hill I remember seeing, not knowing what it was. Thanks.
Nice page on the prehistoric monuments here.
I didn't know of this area.. Stonehenge it seems overrides everything else. Staying in that pub must be quite an experience, but I'd take the food and maybe a wine:-) Interesting area.
This place would be amazing to see... Thanks for the tour Brian.. Great page and info.. ;-)
Silbury Hill looks quite a challenge to climb. Great info !
Thanks for the tip on Avebury. The stone circles would be awesome to see.
Stone Circles in Avebury looks great, I've just added them to my future UK itinery!
Hush, we know it's better than Stonehenge but... ;)
