For our 10-day drive around Alberta, I booked a rental car from Budget about a month before our trip began. I seemed to get a pretty good deal on a Compact, unlimited mileage car with a total price of US$270, taxes included.

At the time that I booked the car, I did not know that we would be taking a 3rd large suitcase with us filled with various gifts for our children and grandchildren, with Christmas not too far off! When we were at the rental counter, the lady mentioned that I should maybe upgrade to something larger, like a Ford Explorer in case we needed more room. She almost sucked me in, but when she quoted the price as being US$400, I decided to stick with the smaller Toyota Echo. As it turned out, the car has a huge trunk with no problem taking the three suitcases as well as a few other carry-ons!

It was also fantastic on gas consumption and handy for driving and parking in downtown Calgary! No complaints at all.
