"The End of the Line" Grande-Entrée by Bwana_Brown

Grand Entree, with a population of only about 650 people, is the upper terminus of the inter-island highway, Rte. 199. This was the last of the islands to be settled, in the 1870's. As with the other islands, fishing is the main pre-occupation and livlihood of the people. In fact, the lobster fishing here is so good that it has been designated as the Lobster Capital of Quebec, with this island bringing in over half of the entire catch from the Madeleines. It was also this part of the island chain that had huge herds of Atlantic Walrus, leading to their large-scale hunting, starting in 1618. Sadly, the species became extinct by 1799. However, the island still has a goodly number of trees and also beautiful dunes on its side facing the Cabot Strait, out into the Atlantic. We spent part of one of our three days on the island, but the wind was gusting up to 50 kph and the temperature was only about 14 C, so we decided to retreat to a more sheltered lee shore on Grosse Ile (see that page for details). While we were there, we did stop to enjoy the view of the cliffs along its ocean side. The photo was taken from Old Harry and shows the waves crashing ashore against rocky caves that have been worn into the cliffs. The edge of these cliffs was also very precarious, so we were careful not to get too close. On the first small outcrop of rocks, we also used our binoculars to view Black Guillemot resting there. They are a northern ocean bird that is the equivalent of the southern hemispere's penguins - they virtually can 'fly' underwater as well as in the air.
