Lunch at Cafe de la Grave

Cafe de la Grave: Amazing Ambience

While exploring the interesting historic buildings at La Grave in the village of Havre-Aubert, we decided to have a light lunch before carrying on for further explorations. Although rather non-descript looking from the outside, once you enter the restaurant you catch the liveliness of the place! Although it was 2 PM, there was still a nice buzz going on and the single large dining room had a cozy atmosphere. The soup du jour with a cold Rickard's Red beer really hit the spot. We thought that we would return later for our evening meal to try something a little more substantial. It was a good choice - the place was lively and, part way through our meal, one of the owners (the man with the white beard in the photo) began playing piano tunes on a nice old upright piano along one of the walls. Both he and an invited patron really knew how to tickle the keyboards - with both of them playing from memory for over an hour.

Favorite Dish: The menu is in French only ,so it was fun trying to figure out what we might be ordering. However, the staff also speak English so they will come to your rescue if necessary! My wife had 'pate au saumon' (like a salmon pie) and I had 'galettes de morue salee' (fried cakes of potatoes and ground salt cod), both of which also came with beet roots, tomato, cucumber and lettuce. At $8.75 (or US$6.50) each, the prices were certainly affordable. With white wine and a Rickard's Red, this was a most enjoyable evening!

This is a photo of the front of the Cafe de la Grave, one of a few old fishing village buildings in La Grave that have been maintained as historical artifacts. It is a nice area to wander and shop.
