Because of our 3-year stay in Papua New Guinea, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy a couple of trips to Honolulu during the course of our trans-Pacific flights. Because of our major jet-lag experience when we flew out to PNG without breaking the trip up (see Sydney), we thereafter made it a policy to at least spend a few days in Hawaii when travelling this leg - there certainly is no reason why one would not want to stop there! Our first chance to experience Hawaii was in April, 1981 when we headed off on our 9-week around-the-world adventure. The second visit was just over a year later, in June 1982, when we headed back to Canada at the completion of my contract in PNG. Always, Honolulu brings back great memories - it was like landing in the lap of luxury after a few years in the 'wild'. Although people say that Hawaii is expensive, compared to PNG there was no shock for us! Photo of Diamond Head in the distance as we stroll along Waikiki Beach. The Head is an extinct volcano towering 750 feet over the city, once a military fortification but now offering great views!
- Pros:A very relaxing place a long way from anywhere!
- Cons:A long way to go!
- In a nutshell:Wish I had explored more of the Island Chain!

Sounds like a lovely place to stroll at night and can imagine the big difference from PNG. Well, maybe it would be even more of a difference if you came from a winter's day in New Brunswick!

When are you going back? Honolulu was our first winter trip where we left the kids home alone, so it is a watershed holiday for us. Other islands next!
