My wife and I were fortunate to be able to enjoy the amazing ambience of San Francisco during a period of absolutely great weather! Our trip was tied in with visits from England by her sister and brother to meet up with the latest addition to the clan by one of our nephews and his wife - residents of SF. It was wonderful to have comfortable accommodations with knowledgable tour guides thrown in as well! One of our best days was viewing the Golden Gate Bridge and then hiking the great walking roads and trails on its north side, not far from Sausalito.
Our first day in SF was spent getting our feet on the ground after our very late flight from Toronto. During the afternoon, we went for a little spin along the Pacific waterfront, just north of Daly City, on the Esplanade Great Highway. It was great to get out and enjoy the sunshine and the surfers after leaving a blizzard behind in Canada!
The next day, we decided to make use of our rental car for the 120-mile drive south to Monterey on US Rte. 1 along the Pacific coast. This trip was very enjoyable, especially the first part between SF and Santa Cruz along this protected section of coastline. We stopped at a couple of the beaches to enjoy the warm breezes, dip our toes in the ocean and admire the cliffs! Photo of one of the beaches with an abandoned WW2 concrete gun emplacement on the head of the cliff. The whole trip just got better and better from that point on! Mind you, we had an inkling that we would enjoy SF based on our only other visit - 24 years before (see my Travelogue)!
- Pros:Too many to squeeze in here - fantastic city!
- Cons:A long way from New Brunswick
- In a nutshell:One of the most enjoyable cities that I have ever visited!

Hi Glenn, nice page. We are thinking of visiting the National Parks during 2012 and SF is one city we intend to visit.
Your tips brought back fond memories of the years when I lived & worked in Berkeley and often crossed the Bay to San Francisco. A good friend of mine lived in the Haight-Ashbury district for part of that time.
Really enjoyable pages, Glenn. How nice to have a private home to stay in with such a fine location. Loved your wonderful food tips. Beautiful photographs of this lovely city.
Hi Glenn, I hope to visit San Francisco again this year, it is a great place! Have a nice day. Ricardo
We're hoping to see San Francisco someday soon. Thanks for the tips, we'll put them to good use when we travel there. The Golden Gate Bridge looks amazing!
lovely page! Nikos
It would be nice to ride the cable cars - but I much prefer the hike, seeing the birds & the wild flowers = Thanks for the tour!
San Francisco is a wonderful city and so easily explored by feet and public transport. Your tips remind me a lot of my visit here. Did you ever see the mist? I missed that somehow.
Great updates Glenn, while u was there did u visit Alcatraz, thats a place i would love to see one day.
It's funny how it can take a couple decades to get back to a place we fell in love with. Fascinating account of the beginning of your PNG experience. Sounds like it was well worth the wait. I see what you mean by "free" now too!
