    • Just outside Mora, in the alpine valleys as I started to head further north to Angel Fire, I was surprised to see what looked like dozens of Ilamas. As I continued to drive out of town, there were many very large open fields with these creatures grazing away. It turns out that they are actually Alpacas, about 3 feet high and the smallest of four South American species. They are cousins of Ilamas and distant relatives of camels, imported into and bred in New Mexico for their fleece. Their special foot structure and small size allows them to tread very lightly, protecting delicate landscapes.
