| Truro's 'New' 1902 Railway Viaduct |
Although there are indications that the city of Truro has been populated since the Iron Age, it only came into it's own in the 1800s as a busy port and market town (it has access to the English Channel via the Truro River which leads into the Carrick Roads sound). However, with the decline of both fishing and the large Cornish tin mining industry, the city now acts as the central commercial meeting point of the county. Being the only city Cornwall, it is also the administrative hub of the region and, for us, it involved a drive of just over 200 miles to reach it from the London area. With a population of only about 20,000 Truro is a smallish and friendly little place to spend some time. Since it is located in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Kenwyn and Allen, the city has a scenic location, with the photo showing part of the present day railroad viaduct which spans the valley.
My wife and I have been visiting this area on and off since the early 1980s due to most of her family having located here. This page primarily describes our experiences in Truro and surrounding area during a Christmas, 2005 visit that favoured us with great weather! |

evaanna Thu Aug 13, 2009 17:59 UTC Your page has brought back memories of my stays in Cornwall, even if I have been to Truro only once and for a short time. Loved the Leat pedestrian way and the ambience of Cornish Christmas. | globetrott Sun Mar 9, 2008 16:40 UTC An interesting page and great updates, Glenn ! This part of GB I did not yet travel through a lot, BUT I saw similar such giant rhubarbs and other giant plants in Inverewe-gardens in Scotland ! | Kuznetsov_Sergey Wed Feb 20, 2008 20:16 UTC Great tips about viaducts! Pity they weren't built by Romans as they usually tell us, ha-ha! Wonderful views from the North Cornwall cliffs. Thanks colleague Glenn for sharing. | lou31 Sat Feb 16, 2008 11:22 UTC I especially liked the tip about the 'Leat'...I love finding places like that. Going for walks can be a great adventure. Looking for destinations for my next UK trip...thanks |
