Lisbon was our first point of contact with Portugal for my wife and I on our 2-week visit to the country. Normally, we are not big city people and usually head for the countryside at the first opportunity. However, my wife's brother had been to Portugal from England a few times and he recommended that we give the city a chance - lot's of things to see and do. I'm really glad that we listened to him because Lisbon turned out to be one of my all-time favourite cities!
As a result, we planned to spend our first 3 days there as well as the final day before we flew out again. Despite our best efforts, there was just too much to see and do in the time that we had. Although we walked the Alfama, Baixa and Belem districts of the city and took a day-trip to nearby Sintra, we only just scratched the surface.
This is a great city to walk around and take in the sites, but be prepared to do some serious walking because it is very hilly. If this is not your style, there is ample cheap public transport as well. It helped that the weather cooperated for us, with sunny days and temperatures between 23-28 C.
Altogether, a truly great experience, as was all of Portugal ! The photo shows a fountain and the statue of King Pedro IV in the huge pedestrian Rossio Square area of the Baixa. |
