"One beautiful little 'White' village!" Top 5 Page for this destination Vejer de la Frontera by Bwana_Brown

In late-December, 2008 Sue and I managed to spend three nights on Spain's very beautiful Atlantic coast along the Strait of Gibraltar, and one of those nights was in Vejer de la Frontera, one of the country's most spectacular 'white villages'. Located atop a 190-m mountain a short distance inland from the coast for defensive purposes, this view was taken from the balcony of our hostal as we gazed out over the surrounding countryside at another white village located on its own peak!

With a population of only 13,000 souls, Vejer is a friendly and compact spot with a history that goes back hundreds of centuries. The town came under Moorish rule in the year 711 and it lasted for more than 500 years until the Christian conquest - with the Moorish influence still readily apparent in the architecture everywhere you look. Between exploring the streets of the town itself, checking out the beach and lighthouse at nearby Cape Trafalgar and exploring the 2000-year old Roman ruins at Baelo Claudia, we certainly had a very enjoyable stay in Vejer de la Frontera!

What a wonderful view from your balcony, and what a lovely village in which to get lost for a while! Cape Trafalgar looks great too - I love any sort of wild coastline. I'd be less keen on the smoky restaurant though - glad that's no longer allowed here!

What a wonderful page, Glenn. This is one of the "White Villages" that we missed so I really enjoyed discovering a new place via your extraordinary descriptions and vivid photographs.

These small white towns and villages on the marches (Frontera) between Moorish and Christian worlds are really charming. You had apparently an “Atlantic weather” Glenn, but caught the best of your trip; I enjoyed reading, as usual!

Vejer de la Frontera is a lovely town but my favorite part is the Cape Trafalgar lighthouse ! Windmills might make sense economically, but at some places they also ruin the landscapes...

What a charming white village! I would also enjoy walking around its cobbled narrow streets, perhaps take a break for a coffee or a glass of wine... You were really lucky with the accommodation, so nice and cheap, and had a great view from your balcony!

Glad to read that Spain is now one of the top 3 wind-power countries in the world -- lots in Germany too, of course, and in Denmark. Some conservative Germans object on aesthetic grounds, but don't object to towers for high-voltage transmission lines.

Fifty years ago today I took a ferry from Ceuta to Algeciras, got my bicycle out of storage and rode it from Algeciras to Vejer de la Frontera.

What a wonderful route in southwestern Spain you had! The battle at Trafalgar has always interested me as well. You were so lucky to see the Cabo de Trafalgar and its area. Thanks colleague Glenn for sharing!
