  • I don't remember too much about the Daru Hotel, even though I spent two nights there. However, I recall that it's accommodations level was a tad below some of the more luxurious places in the more heavily populated regions of the country. Still, I had a bed and roof over my head and with not much else to do, I worked late at the power station one night to get my work cleared up. I never was too upset with a hotel if I could look out my window and see a Palm or Banana Tree of any sort! That looks like the kitchen at the left side of the photo.

As for costs, when travelling on business for the government-run Papua New Guinea Electricity Commission, we simply used travel vouchers that were honoured by the hotels. We never actually forked out any money ourselves, but I remember thinking that the rates would be very expensive if it was coming out of my wallet!

Another of your exotic locations. I wouldn't mind seeing a banana or a palm tree outside my window either. We only have one (artificial) palm tree in the centre of Warsaw! No chance to taste the barracundi fish either.

Keep coming back for more of your 'out of the past and out of the way' pages, Glenn! PNG must have been fascinating in those days. The fresh barra must have been great too I reckon.

I found the tip on the Sago Palm tree interesting. That's a whole lotta starch. The fresh perch sounds yummy.

Next interesting page... I wonder how things work there now. Are you going to revisit PNG? It would be fascinating to read your comparisons...
