Kimbe - A Quiet Spot

by Bwana_Brown - last update: Nov 26, 2005

Viewing the Ru Creek Mini-Hydro Site
I had a couple of occassions to visit the small town of Kimbe, located on the large New Britain Island off the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea (see my 'General Tips' for a map). Even by PNG standards, this was not a 'happening' place during my time in the country, but it is located in a very scenic part of PNG. This view shows some of the typical oil-palm plantation trees with cloud-covered volcanic peaks in the background, at a place called Ru Creek not far from Kimbe. The two Electricity Commission guys with me are wearing their company-issued clothes (to help deal with various oil and other stains that might occur while working in a diesel power station). We were scouting out the progress on a new mini-hydro site, which eventually went into service in 1982, producing 800 kW of power and helping to reduce the dependence on the diesel units.

Yes, 'quiet' certainly looks the right description, but there must be a finite risk of a volcano firing up in that area! The 'virtual visit' was enjoyable though.:))
