I travelled to Kundiawa about 6 months after arriving in Papua New Guinea, due to emergency repairs required at the main electrical substation that supplied this part of the country. Located in Chimbu Province, with 4509-m (14,793-ft.) Mt. Wilhelm, the highest mountain in PNG located not far away, this is a rugged part of the Highlands ranges that stretch all along the central spine of this second largest island in the world. The airstrips in this part of the country were known for their challenging locations, including the one serving Kundiawa, since it was built with a slant to it on the side of one of the many mountains! In my case, both for this trip and on a few other occasions when I passed through by road, I flew into the larger strips in either Goroka or Mount Hagen. This view was taken from near Kundiawa showing the typical up and down terrain characteristic of the area, as well as a small hut on the slope in the centre of the photo. For a map showing the exact location of the town, please refer to my 'General Tips' section. |

Well, I hope it would be cooler up there too than on the ground. | iandsmith Tue May 8, 2007 11:49 UTC How exciting, something I can say with some assuredness that I won't be doing! |
