Buenos Aires - it's great!

by Bwana_Brown - last update: Oct 7, 2007

The sun breaks through in colourful 'La Boca'
Buenos Aires, a port city of 12-million inhabitants (or 'portenos' as they are called), is the natural centre of gravity in Argentina. It has been this way for over 460 years since the first Spanish explorers landed here in 1536. In our case, we flew in from Canada via the USA to spend two fantastic weeks in this great country. However, we learned our lesson well in Lisbon, Portugal - don't be put off by the size of a city. Take a few days to get your feet on the ground and enjoy this amazing city and all that it has to offer while you have the chance.

We spent 3-nights here taking in the sights, on our own timetable, by walking and by using taxis, subways and busses. This was followed by 8-days away in other parts of Argentina, touring the world-famous Iguazu Falls and the Andes mountains near Mendoza, before we returned to Buenos Aires for a final night and one last stab at the attractions of the city!

We found it to be a memorable city, with friendly people, a warm and sunny climate, beautiful architecture and parks. And what can I say about the prices! It is unfortunate that the currency crisis of a couple of years ago has made life difficult for the Argentinians themselves, but it has made this place a heaven for tourists. Prices were 40% of what I would pay for a similar service in Canada. That was a really pleasant change after all these years of converting the wrong way against the US$, the Pound Sterling and the Euro!

Take a look through my page on Buenos Aires and see what you think. I've arranged the 'Things to Do' tips in the order in which we did them ourselves!

Pros:"Totally inexpensive, great attractions, friendly and safe"
Cons:"Traffic fumes"
In A Nutshell:"How come I keep enjoying all these great cities!?"

Wonderful page. The Banyan tree is huge and I never knew that about Eva Peron. Wonderful history lesson. I like some of the touristy places, they are often the best fun.
