Leaving One's Heart in San Francisco

by littlesam1 - last update: Sep 9, 2005

It is not difficult to leave one's heart in San Francisco. Once you have visited this lovely city you will want to return again and again. San Francisco has been the inspiration to many songs, movies, and televsion shows. The rolling hills, the people, the climate all add up to create a perfect experience for those who visit. My opening picture is of a heart located in Union Square. It was from a series of hearts temporarily located around the city several years ago. It is now on permanent display. It was designed and donated by Tony Bennett himself in memory of his hit recording of I left My Heart In San Francisco. Mr. Bennett I can understand your feelings. I too have left my heart in this beautiful city by the bay.

The loveliness of Paris
Seems someshow sadly gay.
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day.

I've been terribly alone
And forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home
To my city by the bay.

I left my heart
In San Francisco
High on the hill

It calls to me.
To be where little cables cars
Climb halfaway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air.

I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco

Above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you

San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me!
I traveled to San Francisco for the first time in September of 1999. I have heard Tony Bennett sing about leaving his heart in San Francisco, Judy Garland sing San Franciso open your golden gates, and even the singers and dancers in the movie Flower Drum Song sing about Grant Avenue San Francisco. I have also read the books in the Tales of the City series by Armisted Mauphin and have watched the various television series based on these novels. But nothing can quite prepare you for the reality of San Franciso. It is a vibrant, exciting, beautiful, clean, and safe city. Even the pictures on this page only begin to describe San Franciso. It is a city that has to be experienced in person. Check out the travel log section for additional pictures.

They like their stamps in Vietnam. They don't quite get the concept of 'postcard' and limited space on it. All the best!

Enjoyed reading your tips. Glad you made it out to Alcatraz after a six year wait. We used to do live radio broadcasts from there during the Native American occupation of the island. Great that you had a VT meeting at the Slanted Door!
