Bratislava

by littlesam1 - last update: Aug 10, 2004

Bratislava is a fascinating city. It is the capitol of Slovakia. When the guys in hats were planning their trip to Prague they had to decide what other places they wanted to see in the area. We were already planning to spend several days in Vienna and the name Bratislava kept catching our attention. But it remains a secret to many people. When I was researching the trip I was surprised at how little information I could find on Bratislava. When I went to my local Barnes and Noble book store to find travel guides there were none available. I asked for information and the woman at the desk did not know what I was asking for. She asked if Slovakia was a language. When I laughed and said "No, its a country." she failed to find my humor in her ignorance.

Of course if you have been reading any of my other pages you might already have a clue as to why Bratislava interested me. I have written on several of my pages about my interest in James Bond films and going to locations from those films. The movie The Living Daylights opens in Bratislava and then moves on to Vienna.

But I found so much more to Bratislava than just James Bond trivia. I found a city that is working hard to change its image and yet still retain much of its old world charm. Bratislava has much to offer the casual tourist. You have to hunt to find it at times but it is worth the search. Come with the guys in hats as they enter the world of intrigue and spys. A world from the cold war past with a promising future. A really beautiful city.

We too were charmed by Bratislava - arriving there via the Danube from Vienna was a good way to do it. leyle

I went to BA in May 2005. Yes it's a nice place. I don't blame a Barnes & Noble sales girl for not knowing Slovakia. It's a country the size of Maryland, and it has only existed as an independent state for less than 2 decades.

you also may as well hit Vienna, since it looks as though you already did two of the three Danube cities.....
