Getting TO/AROUND: The train system is not as useful within Amsterdam as the tram, bus, metro, and light rail network. In addition to Centraal Station, which is the public transportation hub, there are seven stations in the city: Station Zuid World Trade Center, Station RAI, and Amstel Station in the south; Station Lelylaan, Station De Vlugtlaan, and Station Sloterdijk in the west; and Muiderpoort Station in the east.

Because the transportation system is highly integrated, all railway stations are served by two or more of the other modes as well. The train comes into its own for longer distances. It's by far the best way to get to Schiphol Airport, Haarlem, Amsterdam's seaside resort Zandvoort, Hoorn on the IJsselmeer shore, and all other points in Holland. The system is Europe's most punctual-almost 98% of trains leave and arrive within 4 minutes of the scheduled time.

Getting TO/AROUND: Once in Amsterdam the Trams and Buses will get you everywhere you want to go, quickly and cheaply.

    How to Use the Trams:
At the many tram stops around the city you should hail a tram to signal you want to get on. Press the button near the door to open it. If the tram has a conductor you must use the rear door to board. Press one of the red STOP buttons inside the tram to signal the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. Press the button near the door to open it when the tram has stopped

For information regarding the tram, bus, and metro, call tel 0900/9292 Monday to Saturday from 6am to midnight and Sunday from 7am to midnight.

Strippenkaart NOT VALID FROM AUG 2009!: Day Passes
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: The main source for information about public transport and tickets is the GVB ticket office opposite Centraal Station, next to the VVV.

Riding the trams can be quite an adventure itself so if you are planning to use them a lot to get around town purchase a day(s) pass. They range in price according to amount of days you want, 3, 5, 7 or 9 day passes are available. Pictured are 3 day passes for 10,70 Euro and the 9 day passes are 23 Euro.

Day and week passes and strippencards are valid on all trams, buses and metros, and also on trains within the city limits ( an exception is Schiphol airport: you have to buy a train ticket ). You must stamp a day or week pass the first time you use it only.

The trams run until just after midnight ( the last trams leave Centraal Station at 12.15 ). After that there is an hourly service of night buses from Centraal Station.

Getting TO/AROUND: There will be much, much walking to do, so make sure to wear your walking shoes.
Make certain they are comfortable with good support and grip cause it gets wet alot on those cobblestone streets and sidewalks. I found my Timberlands to be the best for walking around Amsterdam.
