A Family Who Loves to Travel

I was born in Munich, Germany and spent four of my growing-up years in Melbourne, Australia (ages 8 to 12). Then for the next 23 years I stayed close to home in the USA. College, graduate school, career.... other than three vacations over the border to Mexico, I focused on the USA. Lots of business trips (and frequent flyer miles!), numerous ski trips out West, a couple of beach vacations.... but I didn't venture back across one of the oceans.

Then in 1991-- at the encouragement of my parents who are world travelers-- I spent two weeks in Europe with two girlfriends. That trip changed my life! Not long after that trip I married a wonderful man and we have a smart and curious six year old daughter. Since that 1991 trip I've made five additional trips to Europe, five with my husband and four with our daughter. If we had more vacation time and more money, we'd go much more frequently. We love to travel and we especially love Europe.

In my pages I'll share more about our travel experiences-- in Europe and in the USA. We enjoy the adventure of exploring new places, but we also find ourselves returning to places we've enjoyed before... to see what we missed the first time around. We have learned how to make the most of our all-too-short vacations abroad. Many people with a child think that it can't be done-- actually I think we probably have a better time with our daughter along. We're building memories for a lifetime!

Here's a short summary of my six trips to Europe:

November 1991 - Trip with two girlfriends. Two weeks, mostly by train: Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Oberammergau, Lucerne, Paris.

May 1992 - Honeymoon trip! Five days in London including a day trip to Salisbury, Bath, Stonehenge.

September 1994 - Trip with a 14 month old. Rented an apartment in Paris for a week. Day trips to Versailles and Angers.

October 1997 - Trip with a four year old. Ten days, mostly by car: Munich, Oberammergau, Salzburg, Lucerne (day trip to Como, see photo below).

April/May 1999 - Anniversary trip with a five year old. Ten days in England, mostly by car: London, the Cotswolds, North Devon, West Sussex/Kent.

December 1999/January 2000 - Christmas/Millennium trip with a six year old. Fifteen days in Munich, Oberammergau, Salzburg, Alsace, Paris (for New Years).

We're now planning a return trip to England in May 2001, hopefully for 15 days. (Note: the picture is from our 1997 trip, taken at Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich.)

We also enjoy travel in our own country... just wish we had more vacation time and money! We have found that long weekends are a fun way to experience new places. And frequent flyer miles help too!
