Known as the Jacaranda City, this is where I grew up, went to school and worked. I was born down at the coast in Port Elizabeth though, but moved to the capital Pretoria (yes that’s right, NOT Cape Town or Johannesburg) in my eleventh year. Although I don't live here at present (see my London, UK page if you were wondering) I'll probably return...
Plenty of shopping for all you money spenders. With the Rand being so weak, you’d be crazy not to spend your Dollars, Pounds or Euros at one of the many shopping centres like Menlyn Park, where you’ll find major fashion labels, restaurants, cinemas and more under one roof.
As far as tourist attractions go, there are a couple of historic buildings, especially around Church Square in the centre of town. Furthermore you’ll find places like the Union Buildings, where the President has his office, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. The Science, Police, Kruger and Transvaal Museums can be found in the city centre.
Fitness freaks can go get a mountain bike and go trail riding in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve. The reserve is situated within the city borders and you’ll be able to see a variety of antelope (like Kudu), ostriches and even giraffes from your saddle. Golf is another option, with no less than 11 quality full 18-hole courses in Pretoria. Water skiing/wake-boarding and other water sports are possible at Roodeplaat Dam and nearby Bronkhorstspruit- and Hartebeespoort Dams.
I spent my student years in Pretoria as well and can safely say that there's plenty of nightlife around. Beers were a lot cheaper back then! Hatfield is the main spot for evening entertainment, being situated close to Pretoria University and it’s hostels. The National State Theatre is situated in the city centre, and different productions (ballets, operas and plays) are continually showing. The above picture is from the top of the Union Buildings, overlooking the city centre.
Beers are average SA prices throughout Pretoria, around $0.65 for a bottle of local stuff.
