General Tips: Illegal to pump your own gas

    • Favorite Thing: That's right, just sit in your car and let the attendant do his/her thing. If you try to pump your own gas it is punishable by law. Once you get back to any of the surrounding states though you're on your own. This is a pretty lame law, in my opinion, but I have to say, I don't mind it when it's raining out!

    • Favorite Thing: Pick up a Willamette Week. It's a free publication and in the center there's a list of venues and what bands will be playing where at what times. WW comes out every Wednesday and can be found at newsboxes around town.

    • Favorite Thing: You should go to Powell's Bookstore. It is one city block and several stories high. There are new and used books and you can always pick one up and take it to the coffee shop and read it while at the store. You can find it at
    1005 W Burnside St. at about 10th or 11th Avenue.

    • Favorite Thing: This is one of the fittest cities in America; try going for a walk or a jog downtown, around Waterfront Park, over the Hawthorne bridge and across the Eastside Esplanade and circle back over the Steele Bridge. It's only about 3 miles and lots of fun. Lots of people to see too, especially if the sun is out. Good views of the city too, from the top deck of the Steele Bridge.

    Fondest Memory: I miss the clean air if I have to work out inside!

    • Favorite Thing: There's a new area code in town kids: 971. It hasn't obliterated good ol' 503 but now there are two in town soooooo...when you dial a phone number you need all 10 digits!

    To recap:
    the Portland Metro Area has 2 area codes: 503 and 971.

    The rest of Oregon uses the 541 area code.
