SEATTLE - THE EMERALD CITY

New City with an Old Time Feel

Pike Place Market
July, 2006 ~ There's something exciting about flying into Seattle. Visiting Seattle for the second time was just as special as the first time. The weather was a perfect--a sunny day, the sky clear and brilliant blue, and mild temperatures. Snow-capped Mt. Ranier could be seen in perfect clarity; if almost looked as if you could reach out and touch it! From the air, the land below was verdant green with meandering rivers and tributaries snaking through the landscape, remnants of lehars from much earlier volcanic eruptions. Then Elliott Bay came into view in the near distance and the excitement about once again being in Seattle really hit home.

We came to Seattle for this second visit to board a ship for Alaska, but of course Seattle is great destination in itself and is just the kind of city that lends itself to exploration! The unfortunate reality was on arrival in Seattle I had a bad case of bronchitis! I didn't want to stay in the hotel room and miss the city, but the exertion of walking up and down the hills in Seattle made it really difficult for me to breath. (People probably thought I was having an asthma attack!!) I slept in an almost upright position and just keep moving during the day, which in the end seemed to help clear out my lungs. We explored Pike Place Market in more depth, returned to Pioneer Square, and the Piers on Elliott Bay, tried a couple of new restuarants, and even the kids did some shopping before boarding the M/S Westerdam to Alaska! We all had a great time!

June, 2004 ~

Ah!!! Finally, we made it to the Northwest. This was my first visit to Seattle and Washington state, in fact, the first time I've traveled to the Northwest corner of the country and I found it definitely to be a much different sort of place than the East Coast! Seattle had the perfect combination for me--a cosmopolitan city on a large body of water, with mountains and wide-open spaces all within a short drive!

Seattle was named after Noah Seatlh, chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish Indian tribes of the Northwest. Founded officially in 1869, Seattle is a relatively new city but one that has seen alot of history. Today Seattle has become a major port and an advanced technology hub --- a far cry from the slippery-slope, gritty gold rush city it was in the late 1800's. Today thousands of cruise ship passengers arrive in Seattle to board ships bound for Alaska. Ironic that Seattle's history was also intertwined with Alaska in the late 1800's when it was also the stepping-off point for thousands "rushing" to Alaska hoping to strike it rich in gold!! This combination of old history and new vitality it enjoys today make Seattle an especially interesting place to visit!

Seattle has a picture-perfect location being surrounded by Elliott Bay and the Puget Sound on the west and the Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges to the south and east. However beautiful the surrounding natural features may be, Seattle is also well known because of a man-made structure-- the Space Needle. The Space Needle was built for the "1962 Century 21 Exposition" also known as the "World's Fair"!

This isn't a comment but a question. Can you bring your dog with you to Pikes Place Market, he is 5lbs. and will be leased or in a carrier? Thanks
