Valletta ~ City of the Knights of St. John

by starship - last update: Feb 19, 2009

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Approaching Valletta's Grand Harbour by sea affords one of the most magnificent views in Europe! Valletta sits upon a rocky peninsula of Malta and its city walls and embankments, medieval fortresses and domes provide memories that will linger long after your visit is over.

Inside Valletta's city walls you will find a grid of narrow streets, tall buildings, squares, churches, bastions, gardens, shops and restaurants bustling with daily life which seem to defy the fact that it looks like a page taken from a much earlier period of history.
Valletta is not only the capital of Malta, but also its chief port, commercial and cultural center -- the heart of Malta you might say. Malta is a treasure of interesting cultural facts and history for those with inquisitive minds.

Valletta was named for Jean Parisot de Valette, the 48th Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. It was through this man's vision that Valletta was established as capital and built by 7 of the 8 factions of the Knights. However, it was not this period of history alone for which the city is important.

Its ancient historical significance is considered so important that the City of Valletta was added to UNESCO's World Heritage site list in 1980. Archaelogists have discovered ruins around Malta, and the smaller islands of Gozo and Comino which suggest that civilizations which pre-date ancient Egypt inhabited Malta as far back as the 4th millennium. Notably, several sites included "Kordin III," "Tarxien," and the "Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni" are just outside of Valletta. In total, these sites are known as the "Megalithic Temples of Malta."

Valletta has some intriguing architecture....also a noble history. The warehouses from the mid-1700's were very interesting! I also agree with your assessment of Hard Rock's cheeseburgers...umm-umm!

Malta, is another European country I haven't been to yet. Especially La Valetta seems to be well worth a visit, especially when looking at your gorgeous photos.
