"Welcome to Wonderful Copenhagen" | Kastrup Airport Welcomes You to Copenhagen! |
Copenhagen or Kobenhavn is the capital and cultural center of Denmark. A unique city with a long & interesting history, Copenhagen is a delightful blend of old buildings, a few from the more modern-era and a population that is lively and dynamic. Jutting into the blue Baltic Sea, Denmark itself is a nation made up almost entirely of islands. It is no wonder the history of this city and the country is so entwined with seafaring, Vikings, and the early struggle for dominance of the Nordic lands.
Copenhagen is famous the world over for many attractions. It is home to Tivoli Gardens and the "Little Mermaid" statue in its harbor. People the world over come to visit its castles, its museums, its castles, and great historic churches. Its famous street, the Stroget, will entice you with great shopping, restaurants and cafes, street performers, and plazas. Copenhagen is also home to that marvelous beer, Carlsberg; Danish modern furniture, and Royal Copenhagen china; and shipping giant, Maersk.
When planning a trip to Copenhagen, give yourself at least several days to sample all its delights! |
| | Radhus Pladsen ~ A Gathering Place It may not be the geographical center of the city, but Radhus Pladsen certainly seemed like the center of Copenhagen to me. During the couple of days of our visit, Radhus Pladsen was always full of people and there was always some activity going on. It's a great place from which to start your exploration of Copenhagen, especially Gammel Strand, or the Old Town of Copenhagen or the Stroget. It certainly lent a feeling of excitement to my day just walking through it! What a great place to start our first day ever visiting Denmark! |
| | Copenhagen Through a Youthful Eye Come to Copenhagen and you'll find it seems to be the 'crossroads' of Scandinavia. Young backpackers come here as if it was a right of passage. They arrive in twos, or threes or in larger groups all with that look of accomplishment and determination to 'see' the world as only youth can. Around the central train station you might find some backpackers setting up a place to cook their noon meal, or meet up with others who are also traveling their way. They may not be here to see the same touristic sights that others are. But they will probably leave Copenhagen knowing alot more about it than I will. I've never traveled as a backpacker and am sorry to say that that opportunity has passed me by. But, I have a certain admiration for the intrepidness of these young people and wish I knew what that kind of traveling is really like. I'm also sorry that I will never see the world through the eyes of youth ever again. |
