Sanibel Island is roughly
12 miles long and 5
miles across, with sister
Captiva Island
measuring in at under 5
miles long and 2 miles
wide. Sanibel Island has
two main roads that
parallel each other.
Periwinkle Way -
named, as are many of
our streets, for a flower-
is the main business
route. West of the
causeway, it leads to the
island's shopping and
dining. Follow it east and
you'll pass a quieter commercial
section, ending up at the
Sanibel Lighthouse and
its beach. At the east end
of the island, around the
historic lighthouse, persist
the roots of Olde Town
Sanibel. In 1884, the
Sanibel Lighthouse first
shone upon San Carlos
Bay, warning sailors and
cattle shippers away from
treacherous sandbars.

Pros:great walking/shelling and off season lack of crowds
Cons:peak season porkers bent over everywhere...
In a nutshell:Nice, easy to get to US destination with lots to do...or not.

I do love the Sanibel area, but I cannot wait to go back to Juniper Springs again. There are monkeys in the trees there!! That was the area where they filmed all those old black and white tarzan movies, they brought monkeys and then let them loose.
