The Pearl Of The Orient... Pulau Pinang comprises of an island and a strip of land on the mainland known as Seberang Perai (Province Wellesley). These two regions are linked by the 13.5km Penang Bridge. Though this state is offically called Pulau Pinang, it is well-known as Penang and this name is frequently used by the locals and travelers. The capital of Pulau Pinang is Georgetown. And did you know that the Island of Penang was fondly referred to as “The Pearl Of The Orient” by the British who ruled during those days? If you don't, now you know. :-)
Pulau Pinang is a fascinating state. It is such a multi-cultural society due to the cross cultures evolving from a variety of ethnic group from many different countries, such as Thailand, Burma, Sumatra, Java, India and South China. These different group of people have brought in year round festivals, religious celebrations and food to the state till this very day. |
