Aberystwyth Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 79 photos
What in the world, i went to Aberyswyth. Well, first of all, it was a coincidence trip tp Wales. As my mate Gerard actually came to this university town to attend his invitation course for a week. So, I followed along get a chance to see the country side and lifestyle.
It was winter cold, first experience and a culture shock as it was my first trip in the Europe continent. By second day, I readily myself explore the beautiful town and promenade.
To some people may think its a waste of time and money visiting this unknown town. But I discover, Aberystwyth is rich with culture and history, and the amazing scenery in the winter.
The town is huddled between three hills and is focused around a seafront with two gritty beaches, some castle ruins, a pier and a harbour. Of the three hills: Pendinas to the south has visible remains of an ironage fort and a monument to Wellington. To the north is Constitution Hill with a cliff railway for those not up to the 110m ascent up the zigzagged path to the summit. Rising more gently to the east is Penglais Hill hosting, the hospital, the National Library of Wales and the main Aberystwyth University Campus including an Arts Centre. Almost everything in Aberystwyth can be reached by a 10/15 minute walk from the centre of town.
It was an awfully long journey from London, though is because the Virgin trains that time were not as fast as today. But the bright side is that, an opportunities of sighteseeing almost half of Wales state. The trains actuall depart from London Euston and changing train at Birmingham before another change of train at Wolverhampton and return further south again heading to Aberystwyth, Ceredigion region.
I get to see the hills and snowdon, particular amazed for the first time to see running sheeps, as Wales particularly has a large export of lamb (sheeps obviously). The typical welsh house and beautiful sceneries compliment the whole journey to my destination. Then, upon arrival it was wet and dark, not a chance of sightseeing as most shops are closed and everyone seems dissappeared.
The university town has one of most unique historical site in Wales. The castle ruins was claimed to decay beginning the 14th century. It was a great trip, getting to ruined towers and fort which some of them built during the Iron Age. You can actuall imagine how those days when castle used as a defence fort, with a tower window looking over the sea, checking any intruders landing their land.
The ruins offers an extensive view of the town, sea and hills. Perfect for picture taking and of course will be much better in the summer.
