WHAT I KNOW ABOUT BILBAO? Main city of north Spain, known more at the Basque region. Basque people have their own native language but generally people of Bilbao speak spanish. More or less, Bilbao has a little significant influence from France in terms of their gastronomic and also i never knew Bilbao actually very near to Lourdes (Catholic famous pilgrimage) no wonder people of Bilbao are very obvious catholic believer especially events in the Holy Week (see picture) but the same time mainly new generation enjoy the laidback lifestyle, more cafes and malls grew around the city like mushroom. Bilbao become famous as the city of art in Europe since the existence of the Guggenheim Museum; large collection of art in paintings, sculptures and sophisticated laser light show. |

WHEN WAS THE TRIP? I WENT in March 19 to coincide with Maria's birthday. It was still early spring in London. And of course we flew by easyjet from Stansted easy reach from Finchley Road station. Flight was quite short (i think almost 2 hours). From the plane, i could see wonderful blessed landscape and some part of high hills of Bilbao were covered with snow. Probably piles of snow is just beginning to melt. Everyone in the aircraft is almost at awe looking the landscape. We arrived and notice the new airport is still under construction. Getting to the town is easy, a direct bus to city centre only takes 45 minutes and less. |
WHAT I THINK OF BILBAO? FIRST thing is the weather. After long months of winter in London, im glad at least i feel some hot sunny day in Bilbao. It was actually too hot on the second day (temperature reached 32c). Bilbao has a fantastic landscape, well organised transport and road system and fashionable people on the streets just like what you see in Buenos Aires. Most of them are gorgeus people walking around, fancy dress and accessories glitters Bilbao highstreet. Unfortunately, (maybe i have high expectations) Bilbao people do not know Cappucino (a drink which almost served any part of the world) but what they did served me coffee and milk (latte obviously). Architecture in Bilbao is fantastic from parks to churches and to wonderful famous Guggenheim Museum. A giant puppy flower is right in front of the museum (which appeared in (Tomorrow Never Dies - James Bond). And the best of all, i enjoyed to be one of the spectators of the Holy week procession. First evening, after our quick snack, we enjoyed the whole 1 1/2 hour procession which falls on saturday, coincide with the Procession of Our Lady of Sorrow (if not mistaken). The procession looks creepy than ever, hooded pilgrims reminds me those anti-blacks hooded people in the 50's in the State. |
