WELL DONE ELLEN!!

by freya_heaven - last update: Feb 9, 2005

Ellen is in there somewhere!!
I was fortunate to have the privilege to welcome back Ellen Macarthur to Falmouth from her record breaking sail around the world.

It was a wonderful day 1000s of people attended and a fantastic atmosphere. There was so much media attention there, 5 helicopters circling above us filming, plus countless on the ground crews interviewing people & waiting for their chance to interview Ellen herself.

Ellen MacAuthur has desevedly just been made a Dame and an Honorary Lieutenant Commander by the Royal Navy!

The Boat!
“Ellen Macarthur, crossed the finish line off Ushant at 22:29:17 GMT (Monday, 7.2.05) to set a new solo, non-stop round the world record of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds. Macarthur has taken 1 day, 8 hours, 35 minutes, 49 seconds off the previous fastest 72 day, 22 hours, 54 minute solo time of Francis Joyon (Joyon finished his record attempt on 3.2.04).” ( Information taken from her web site)

Ellen giving her talk
One of my favourite memories was standing next to an old lady maybe in her late 70s early 80s, watching Ellen sail in to the harbour, she turned to me & said “I feel so emotional, Ellen is such a fantastic woman & I feel so proud ” with that a tear ran down her cheek as she struggled to contain herself.

I have to admit I felt it too.

Hi Nicola, I've been racing sailboats for 24 years and can't even begin to imagine the enormity of Ellen's accomplishment. Thanks for the photos and being a witness...Tom
