Slapton & Torcross has a tragic recent history. Tor Cross is the village taken over by the Americans during the Second World War. The huge stretch of pebbly beach Slapton Sands was used in training for the D Day landings.

During practice landings Operation Tiger on April 28th 1944, over 640 American service men were killed by a passing German Torpedo boat when their landing boats were hit. The sea here can be very trecherous & deep, which are other factors for the great loss of life.

The actual village of Slapton is about half a mile inland of the beach.

Slapton Beach!

A very sad history but a lovely beach. I would love to do some birdwatching here. Another great page, Nicola.

A beautiful little page with great photos and lots of very useful information! It reminds me of why I always look forward to visiting England. Very sad about that WW2 incident, but, as the plaque says, they learned a lesson from it for the Big One.
