The 12th century monastery at Alcobaca, was one of my favourite places in Portugal. It has been given Unesco World Heratige Site rating which is well deserved.
The Monastery took over 40 years to build, it was one of the most powerful abbey estate in the country, with 999 monks living there. It is thought the monks had a continual mass, taking it in shifts. |
