Dartmoor National Park Travel Guide: 64 reviews and 152 photos

Dartmoor became a national park in 1951, this beautiful & desolate area covers 368 square miles. The River Dart winds its way through the valleys and under ancient stone bridges accompanied by smaller streams and tributaries.

Areas of the park in the north are partitioned off the army training, but you are free to wander or horseride through the rest of Dartmoor, with there being over 600 miles of public rights of way.

It has always been a wonderful treat to vist Dartmoor, and I have visited often over the years, being lucky enough to live with a few miles of its boundarys.

The Park is run by the Dartmoor National Authority, with 4 information centres plus the usual tourist offices in towns on the Moor.

"Stick To The Road, Stay Off The Moors"........................... was the advice of the customers of the Slaughtered Lamb.

Actually I recommend you do the opposite to appreciate the full beauty Dartmoor has to offer.

Pros and Cons

Nice page on a place that has a somewhat sinister reputation! I hadn't heard the prison may be closing - but I haven't been here for ages! Congrats on the Engagement by the way (even if it was a long time ago!). Lke the BT van too!

I love this page, (Nice place for picnic.) it is imformative, and at the same time very revealing. The fine mix of Old and Current events at this park makes it a classic. Thanks for sharing.
