I LOVED Torcello, It is such a peaceful place (or was on a sunny afternoon in February). We were the only people who got off the Vaporetto there & seemed to have the place to ourselves.
Its about a 10 minute walk from the vaporetto stop to the main square, the place is a bit unkempt & scruffy, but I think this all adds to the charm of the place.
This was a wonderful contrast to Tourist ridden Venice and other Islands we had visited.
Only 80 people now live on this once malaria infested Island. In the Islands hay day from the 7th to the 13th centuary it was the home to an unbelievable 20,000 people.
Apart from the Venice Carnival, I think Torcello was my next favourite memory of my time in the Venice area. |
