Just go the opposite way to all the tourist sign posts and its actually very easy to get off the beaten track in Venice. There are many lonely & hidden back street canals and alleys to be discovered.
The Island of Torcello in particular was very quiet when we were there, apart from an old local couple we didnt actually see anyone else on the Island. Check out my Torcello,

Lovely page and photos. Of course, I loved the "birdbath". I can't imagine why they didn't want to take a Freya in the gondola. |
