They say that if you Survive Tangier and Tetouan, you will love the rest of Morocco.
We did, and are looking forward to our next trip further south in Morocco.
Tangier has a facinating recent history. I the first half of the last century it was known as an "International City". Tangier had its own laws and administration, and was also known as the most famous and first Gay resort in the world. Also at the time one of the most stylish resorts in the Med.
Because of its very loose tax laws and Tangier port being a Free port in the 1950s (which was Tangiers hay day) there were over 4000 companies and no less than 70 banks in Tangier alone. Many of which are alleged to have been dealing in practices which were illegal in their own countries. During this time the population of Tangier was nearly 130,000. An increadible Sixty thousand of which were foreign communities.
Once Morocco gained Independence in 1956, Tangiers special status was removed and within a very short time most of the companies moved to Switzerland or Spain and the expat communities dwindled to near what they are today, which is only under 2000 on a city now with a population of 425,000. |
