  • The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is a wonderful place. There are so many exhibits in here to see, over 100,000 artifacts. It is impossible to take more than a fraction of it in. The area which sticks in my mind most is the Mummy room. It was quite surreal to be looking at bodys of people milleniums old.

The night after we had been to The Egyptian Museum..............................

It was the middle of the night and I was suddenly awoken by Helen, in the next bed to me screaming. Her bed was shrouded in her mosquito net hanging from the ceiling. I could just make out her outline as she was sat bolt up right staring straight ahead, screaming at the top of her voice.

I had no Idea what was going on, so I joined in and started screaming too, partly (well mostly) out of fright and I also thought if there was anyone in the room they would certainly flee.
The sound of my screaming startled her & she awoke to ask me what I was screaming at!! ....................I turned out she had nightmares of Mummys as a child & visiting the Egyptian Museum had brought it all back & she had had another nightmare.

    T'was Very amusing

    Mosques: Mosque of Mohammed Ali
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Mosque of Mohammed Ali, is also know as the Alabaster Mosque. It is in the Islamic area of Cairo ( although it didnt seem any more Islamic than the rest of the city! )

The Mosque was built in the 1830s & 40s, by Mohammed Ali, and he is also buried inside.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The attractive Alabaster Mosque is also known as the Mosque of Muhammed Ali. There are pleasant walkways & gardens surrounding the mosque to enjoy.

Situated in the Islamic area of Cairo

    Gizeh Pyramids: Pyramids
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is not until you get close up you can appreciate the feat and engineering which must have been involved in the building the the Pyramids.

Each block is Huge. the Pyramid of Cheops took 30 years in the making, 10 to build the causeway & earth ramps and 20 to actually build the Pyramid.

See my main Pyramids of Giza page for lots of Info & More photos.

    Gizeh Pyramids: Sphinx
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Arabic work for the Sphinx is Abu Al-Hol, which means Father of Terror.

Over the centurys it has had many superstitions held against it, and it is not really known what the Sphinx purpose was.

The Sphinx is 50 meters long and 22 meters high, it is built almost entirely
from one piece of limestone, carved out of the quarry on which it stands.

The nose and beard have worn away badly and plans are underway to restore the Sphinx to its former glory

    River Nile: Corniche Walks
  • Tip Rating:
  • A late afternoon/early evening walk along the banks of the Nile is very relaxing, especially if you have a wonderful sunset.

Helen & I usually went for a walk & a sit along the side of the Nile at the end of the day, before heading off in to the Nile Hilton for a drink surrounded by the gorgeous smell of honey & rose shishas.

Enlarge the photo & hopefully you will see the a Nile sunset in Helens glasses (~_~)

    Citadel: Citadel Views
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mosque of Sultan Hassan on the left of the photo was built in 1363 AD. It is believed stone from the Pyramids at Giza were used in the Mosques construction. The building has not always been a Mosque it was originally a theological school.

Mosque of Al Rifai on the right is a 19th centuary Mosque. Members of the Egyptian royal family are buried here as is the Shar of Iran.

Khan el Khalili: ~Khan el Khalili~
  • Tip Rating:
  • The roots of the largest Bazar in the world started in 1382 by Garkas el Khaili. The Bazar started life as a small Caravan trading place, and gradually grew to the immense market place it is today.

It is so alive, an attack on all the senses. Bargining is the order of the day here. Have fun & enjoy it.

Pyramids is a wonder ... but "social" environment around is a disaster ... crooks, vendors, "guides" etc.
