The Treasury: Khazneh

  • I imagine apart from possibly the Siq this the most photographed building in Petra.

The Khazneh, or more often called the Treasury is an exitedly anticipated delight as you walk through the narrow Siq,

It is believed it is dated to somewhere between 100BC to 200AD. The Treasury stands 40 meters high and inside is a main room with a smaller room behind.

The Treasury gets its name from the mistaken belief that at one time treasure was hidden here, particulaly in the Urn at the top.

You can still see the bullet holes of where people have tried to shoot the Urn open for the treasure to fall out.

The Siq's and Treasury's most famous claim to fame was when it was in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

    Things To Do: Amphitheatre
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Amphitheatre was constructed it is believed around the time of Christ. It was originally thought the Romans built it at a later date, but this has now been discounted.

It holds 8000 people, and includes store rooms under the stage plus a slot where curtains could be lowered at the beginning of a performance.

  • The Urn tomb is one of the impressive Royal Tombs. It is not actually known who the kings are the name refers to.

Inside the huge room measures 20 meters by 18 meters!

As you can see by the photo of me in the doorway, Its a big place

    (~_~)

  • When you see the Urn Tomb from a distance, it makes it seem even more incredible how these people constructed these buildings 2,000 years ago.....................Amazing!

  • Another of the Kings Tombs is the Corinthian Tomb, it along from the Urn Tomb.

Sadly it has not stood the test of time as well as the Urm and many of the other Tombs have

    Things To Do: Corinthian Tomb
  • Tip Rating:
  • A more distant photo of the Corinthian Tomb sitting at the base of the dominating Jebel Khubtha. It is easy to see why Petra was lost in time to the outside world for so many centuries.

Things To Do: Qasr al-Bint Firaun

  • Qasr al-Bint Firaun is Nebataean and dates from around 30BC, and is Petra's only Nabataean free standing building.

Qsar al-Bint, means "Castle of the Pharos Daughter" in the Bedeu language. It is also known as the Temple of Dushara, after the god Dushara who was worshipped there. It is thought that this free standing building was the Nabataeans main place of worship.

Legend goes a Nabataean Princess professed the "any man who could supply running water to Qsar al-Bint Fariun, she would marry".....................No man ever did.

    The Monastery: The Monastery

  • I found the Monastery to be the most impressive building in Petra, It is HUGE at 50 meters wide and 45 meters high.

Carved in the 3rd century BC, there is evidence the Monastery was later used as a church as ther are carved crosses on the inside of the building.

  • It is only when you stand in the Monastery doorway you can really appreciate just how big this really place is. The doorway alone is 8 Meters High, I am dwarfed by the opening, felt like a shrunken Alice clambering up the large step to get in the the giant doorway!!

  • As mentioned it is possible to climb on to the top of the Monastery to the Urn. The views from up there are stunning, well worth the effort to get up there.

Its a BIT scary looking over the edge of the roof to the front of the monastery below (and this was before I got vertigo!)
